FFL Transfers in Iowa: What They Are & Why They Matter

If you’re buying a firearm online or through a private party, there’s a good chance you’ll need to go through an FFL transfer—and if you’re in Iowa, that’s where we come in.

At Black Helmet Gun Shop in North English, we’re a licensed FFL dealer, and we make the transfer process fast, affordable, and painless.

But first… let’s break down the what, when, and why of FFL transfers.

What Is an FFL Transfer?

An FFL (Federal Firearms License) transfer is when a licensed gun dealer receives a firearm on your behalf, logs it into their inventory, and then transfers it legally to you.

This is required by federal law any time a gun is shipped across state lines or sold by a business to a private buyer.

Think of it like a legal checkpoint:

  • You can’t just have a Glock shipped to your house.
  • You need a licensed intermediary (like us) to handle the transfer and background check.

When Do You Need an FFL Transfer?

You’ll need an FFL transfer in any of these cases:

  • ️ You bought a gun online (GunBroker, PSA, Buds, etc.)
  • You’re receiving a gun from out-of-state
  • You’re being gifted a firearm by someone outside Iowa
  • You’re selling or trading through a third-party website

Basically, if a gun is being shipped to you—or handed over by someone you don’t live near—you need a transfer.

How the Process Works at Black Helmet

Here’s how easy it is to do a transfer with us:

  1. Buy your firearm online
At checkout, select Black Helmet Gun Shop as your receiving FFL.
Or if they ask for your FFL’s contact info, give them our name and phone number:
    Josh Humphrey – (515) 661-4980
  2. The seller ships it to us
We’ll call or text you as soon as it arrives.
  3. Complete your background check
Bring your valid ID and permit (if applicable).
You’ll fill out a Form 4473 and we’ll run a quick NICS check.
  4. Pick up your new firearm
Once approved, you’re good to go.

Why choose us for transfers?
Because unlike the big box stores, we’re not out to gouge you. We charge a fair price and handle everything quickly.

What Does It Cost?

At Black Helmet Gun Shop, we keep things simple. Our transfer fee is competitive and much more affordable than what you’ll pay at the big stores.

We’re in this because we love firearms—not to nickel and dime our customers.

⚖️ Is It Legal to Skip the FFL?

Short answer: NO.

  • If the seller is an FFL (which most online dealers are), then the firearm MUST go through another FFL for delivery.
  • Skipping the process = breaking federal law = not worth it.

We’re all about responsible, legal firearm ownership. If you’ve got questions, we’re happy to explain the rules—without the legalese or condescension.
