Licensed Class III dealer Suppressors, SBRs, and more ATF Form 4 transfers handled Iowa legal — no extra state restrictions

What Is an NFA Item?

The National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934 regulates a specific category of firearms and accessories that require additional federal registration and a $200 tax stamp to own. These aren't illegal — they're just subject to a stricter transfer process through the ATF.

Iowa has no additional state-level restrictions on NFA items beyond federal law, which makes it one of the more straightforward states to own a suppressor or SBR. If you're a law-abiding Iowa resident who can pass a standard background check, you can own NFA items.

The process takes patience — ATF wait times can run several months — but the paperwork itself isn't complicated when handled by a dealer who knows what they're doing.

Suppressors (Silencers) The most commonly transferred NFA item. Legal in Iowa, require a tax stamp and ATF Form 4 approval.
Short-Barrel Rifles (SBR) Rifles with a barrel under 16 inches or overall length under 26 inches. Require Form 1 (if you're making one) or Form 4 (if transferring).
Short-Barrel Shotguns (SBS) Shotguns with a barrel under 18 inches or overall length under 26 inches.
Machine Guns (Pre-1986) Transferable machine guns are legal but limited to pre-1986 registered examples. Supply is fixed; prices reflect it. Call us to discuss.
Any Other Weapons (AOW) & Destructive Devices Less common categories. Contact us to discuss eligibility and availability for specific items.

How an NFA Transfer Works at Black Helmet

1

Choose and Purchase Item

Select a suppressor or other NFA item — either from our inventory, through an online dealer, or from an individual seller. Purchase item. If not in stock, item will be shipped to store.

2

Complete the Paperwork

We handle ATF Form 4 for dealer-to-individual transfers. We do this thru Silencer Shop portal. You will set up your Silencer Shop account and Eforms account. Your will complete your digital fingerprints at the shop through our Kiosk. Individual or Trust — we'll walk you through the right ownership structure for your situation.

3

Wait for Approval

Once your eform 4 has been submitted to the ATF, you will wait for approval. Currently wait times are 24 hours to 3 months depending on the applicant.

4

Pick up Item

You will receive an email from ATF Eforms once your application has been approved. We receive this as well. Once received, you will set up a time to come pick your item up. At the store, you will complete a Form 4473(standrd gun purchase form) and take home your item.

Why More Iowa Shooters Are Going Suppressed

Suppressors don't make firearms silent — that's a Hollywood myth. They reduce report to a level that's safer for your hearing and less disruptive to neighbors at the range. For hunters, they reduce flinch and make communication in the field easier without compromising terminal performance.

Iowa legalized suppressor hunting in 2017. You can use a suppressed firearm for deer, turkey, coyote, and most other legal game. Combined with the fact that Iowa has no state-level NFA restrictions, there's never been a better time to go through the process.

NFA Questions We Get All the Time

Can I buy a suppressor in Iowa?

Yes. Iowa allows suppressor ownership with no state-level restrictions beyond federal requirements. You need to be a legal resident, pass a background check, and complete the ATF Form 4 process through a licensed dealer like Black Helmet.

How long does the NFA transfer take?

ATF approval times fluctuate. E-filed Form 4 transfers currently run several months. Paper submissions take longer. We'll give you a realistic current estimate when you come in — ATF publishes wait time data and we track it.

Should I buy as an individual or through a trust?

Both are valid. An NFA trust allows multiple people (co-trustees) to possess the item, which is useful for married couples or family situations. Individual ownership is simpler paperwork. We'll help you decide based on your situation — there's no one-size-fits-all answer.

Can I use my suppressor while I'm waiting for approval?

No. Your NFA item stays at Black Helmet until your tax stamp is approved and returned. Taking possession before approval is a federal felony. We hold it safely until the paperwork clears.

Can I take my suppressor out of Iowa?

Yes, but you need to notify the ATF before traveling to another state with your NFA item. This is done via a Form 5320.20. Not every state allows suppressor possession, so confirm the laws in your destination state before you go.

Do I need a special host firearm?

Your suppressor must be compatible with your firearm's caliber and thread pattern. Most modern firearms can be threaded if they aren't already. Call us before you buy — we'll confirm compatibility so you're not stuck with a suppressor that doesn't fit your setup.
